A Free SNES For Japanese People In Quarantine

The Super Nintendo Entertainment System (or SNES for short) isn’t a weak platform – despite its near three-decade age, it is still a highly memorable console!

The Japan Retro Game Association, which we will shorten to JARGA from now on, want to give away some free SNES-es, or Super Famicoms (SFCs – the console was called as such in Japan) for a few Japanese families that have children in the household and are affected in the coronavirus emergency. The JARGA announced on Twitter that the old-but-gold 16-bit console will also get two games: Final Fantasy VI by Square (Square Enix nowadays), and Donkey Kong Country by Rare, meaning people could spend time with a JRPG and a solid platformer.

On JARGA‘s website, the families had to fill out a form (we used the past tense on purpose: the deadline is April 26, 23:59 JST, and they are several hours ahead of us). The participants have to have a child who is younger than sixteen in the family, and they also have to pay for the shipping when they receive the package (JUST the shipping!). The one hundred winners will be announced on April 27.

The tweet likely shows Yutaka Ishii, the president of JARGA. The tweet also mentions the families should check if they have a TV that supports RCA (red, yellow, white, composite cables), but these old TV sets are often sold for about 500 JPY in Japan or nearly five dollars, so it’s not a big expense to pick up an old used CRT television to play old consoles/games.

Still, it is a wonderful idea! Sure, the SNES is not a new platform, but it’s a console you can’t ignore. It had a lot of amazing games, and its controller was also a joy to use.
