PlayStation 5: No Smart Delivery-Like Benefits

It makes sense: Sony‘s next-gen console is not going to follow the trend that Microsoft is going to pull.

GameSpark, a Japanese publication, contacted Sony Interactive Entertainment, and the response got translated on Twitter: „The update program for PlayStation 4 > PlayStation 5 software copies will be done at the publisher’s discretion, but Sony Interactive Entertainment stated that they will flexibly support these upgrades even in Japan as well

(note that it’s still unknown whether they deal with PlayStation 4 > PlayStation 5 Digital Edition).”

Electronic Arts has already responded in Madden NFL 21’s press release: they stated that the PlayStation 4 > PlayStation 5 free upgrade will only be supported for the digital sales (via PlayStation Store, obviously). It’s understandable: the publisher cannot prove that we do own the copy of that Madden NFL 21 in any way, and for digital transactions, they can easily find proof of us owning the game.

Before we start to criticize Sony, keep in mind that Jim Ryan, the president and CEO of SIE, says (and we wrote) that it’s time for the players to get experiences exclusively on PlayStation 5. Thus, cross-gen EXCLUSIVES, that are developed by SIE Worldwide Studios, is not going to happen, and thus, having no Smart Delivery-like program is understandable. And the fact that they give the publishers the choice to support the free upgrade or not with the third-party titles is the same method that Microsoft uses (we discussed the Smart Delivery in detail the other day). We also heard that Sony is pushing for all PlayStation 4 games launching after mid-July to support the PlayStation 5 as well.

The PlayStation 5 also got its first official vertical image. The huge console’s both variants can be seen on it. The PlayStation 5 Standard Edition and the PlayStation 5 Digital Edition (lacking a Blu-ray drive) will launch this Holiday season. We recently mentioned a possible release date and price strategy.
