The Next Tomb Raider Will Act As A Bridge

Crystal Dynamics‘ next game will want to act as a link between the past and the future.

Indeed: Lara Croft is not getting ignored, even though Crystal Dynamics has something else on its plate. Namely, a game called Marvel’s Avengers with its live service updates, as well as its next-gen version, as the game did not get that popular, and the team wants to do things right on the new consoles. The team, however, wants to deal with something else, too. Something that Square Enix will not officially release for a long time.

On Twitter, Crystal Dynamics and Square Enix wrote the following: „We’re celebrating 25 Years of Tomb Raider throughout 2021, with community features, nostalgic content, and surprises along the way!” The tweet also included a video, which featured Will Kerslake, the director of Tomb Raider. He revealed that the next project in the series will act as a link between the original 4 (5… and no, we are not including The Angel of Darkness from 2003!) titles with the reboot trilogy that ran between 2013 and 2018.

„We envision the future of Tomb Raider unfolding after [the rebooted trilogy], telling stories that build upon both the breadth of Core Design and Crystal Dynamics’ games, looking to unify these timelines. With Tomb Raider’s extensive history, this is not an easy task, and we ask for patience as we go through the process,” Kerslake said.

This confirms that the next Tomb Raider will be set after 2018’s Shadow of the Tomb Raider but before the first game that was released in 1996. Lara Croft will not be a rookie as she was in 2013’s Tomb Raider (the first title in the reboot trilogy), but not as wily as in the four games between 1996 and 1999. (After 1999’s The Last Revelation, we thought that Lara was dead, but Core Design found a way to use the already tired formula for a fifth title, Tomb Raider: Chronicles, by characters remembering her stories..)

We should be patient.
