Sony‘s (and even the gaming industry’s) most successful game PlayStation 2 console can now be made into a portable version, as a modder managed to achieve this feat with not-so-bad results.
“After two months of having this consume my life, I’m excited to finally unveil the PS2 Eclipse: a PlayStation 2 console packed down into a Nintendo Switch style handheld,” GingerOfOz, the creator (who also made a portable Nintendo Wii the size of a Game Boy), wrote on Twitter. As expected, there had to be some cutbacks done, as you can’t carry around a handheld the size and weight of a mobile phone of the early 1990s, can you?
The console that sold over 150 million units had its motherboard trimmed down for size, and the modder used custom circuits boards, all inserted into a 3D printed casing. Then, it got the buttons of a PlayStation Vita (which should have received more love in the West), the analogue sticks of the Nintendo Switch, and a 5″ 480p display (which is a standard resolution of the era, although a couple of PS2 titles did support 1080i resolution…).
The PS2 Eclipse also features speakers, a headphone jack, and a battery life indicator. While it sounds reasonable, it also comes with a couple of flaws. The Verge notes that games can stutter, and the loading times might be pretty slow, as they load relatively slowly off a USB drive (because the handheld doesn’t have a DVD drive in it…). It also sometimes has a hard time detecting an attached controller, and some games refuse to load.
GingerOfOz’ blog explains how the PS2 Eclipse was created. However, unlike the portable Wii he made, there are no plans to make these in bulk and sell them off. (A C&D letter could happen nevertheless.)
