PlayStation 5 reaches one million sold in Japan

The hype for the PlayStation 5 is not stopping, and it has reached a new milestone in under a year, this time in Japan.

There has been some doom and gloom about the Japanese market regarding Sony and especially Microsoft’s console as of late. With mobile gaming and the Nintendo Switch’s dominance over there, Sony trying to focus more on the western markets. Some fans have been speculating Sony does not really care about the Japanese market as much as they used to.

There does seem to be still steam left in the Japanese market as after fourty-three weeks , even with Covid, and massive issues relating to shortages, they will sell one million units faster than the PlayStation 4 back in 2014. Reaching one million for the PlayStation 4 took until January 2015, and that was nearly a year later (without any COVIDS or chip shortages).

As of September 5, Sony Interactive Entertainment’s next-generation console has sold 1,012,656 units in Japan—847,421 units of the standard model, and 165,235 units of the Digital Edition. Last week’s sales were 15,580 and 1,495 units, respectively.

Its highest selling game at retail is Resident Evil Village (released May 8, 2021), with over 67,000 copies sold.

Famitsu’s data provided these numbers, and hopefully, as the chip shortage and Covid ends in a year or two, the PlayStation 5 will sell even faster down the line.
