Battlefield 2042 Receives Harsh Criticism For One Of Its Specialist Features

Some users have found the use of the term “little green man” offensive in Battlefield 2042

Battlefield 2042 is about to bring its intense warfare to our homes, and it looks like there’s an appetite for shooting after its beta gathered almost 8 million players across PC, PlayStation and Xbox. It’s not all good news for the folks at Dice, though, who have been accused of insensitivity in their depiction of the 2014 Russian Intervention in Ukraine.

The controversy has been sparked by one of the aspects of Russian specialist Pyotr “Boris” Guskovsky. One of Boris’ mastery levels shows the appearance of what Dice have dubbed the “Little Green Man”, a term associated with the unidentified Russian troops who occupied and blockaded Simferopol International Airport, most of Crimea’s military bases and the Simferopol parliament.

Dice’s use of the term has been offensive to some players, who have criticised the developer for trivialising the conflict. Dice has been quick to apologise and thank users for their help in “making positive changes to the game”. The company has assured that “the use of the name was not intentional”.

In addition to the response to one of the users, Dice has made a statement on the official Battlefield Twitter account explaining that thanks to users, they have been able to detect the fact that the appearance refers to a real-world problem and does not reflect the team’s values so that they will change it in a future update. Battlefield 2042 will arrive on 19 November on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One and Xbox X Series X|S.
