Spencer says he’s a fan of Double Fine and believes the sequel to Psychonauts is the best game Tim Schafer’s studio has ever released

The recent nomination for Game of the Year at The Game Awards 2021 for Psychonauts 2 shouldn’t have caught anyone by surprise. Tim Schafer’s new title won us over with action and environments you’ll want to explore down to the smallest detail. It looks like Double Fine has another big fan of its games, though.

Xbox boss Phil Spencer himself has declared himself a lover of the studio’s games in a chat with Major Nelson, reported by Pure Xbox, where Spencer confesses what he thinks is the game of the year. “Honestly, for me, Psychonauts 2 is probably the game of the year, it’s just a fantastic game. In my opinion, as a Double Fine fan, it’s the best game they’ve ever released,” said Spencer.

Spencer didn’t just play the latest instalment of Double Fine’s original franchise, but he also shared that before Psychonauts 2 was released, he decided to revisit the 2005 classic, playing it through backwards compatibility, and confessed to being impressed after reliving the original adventure after all this time.

Psychonauts 2 has received numerous congratulations since its release, including from PlayStation Studios president Hermen Hulst. Tim Schafer’s work is not just about visuals and gameplay. It also strives to treat mental health issues with great respect and naturalness, normalising the need to seek therapy.
