SEGA Registers A New Trademark In Japan For Its NFTs

SEGA let it be known that the future of this business will depend largely on the reaction of the players

NFT here, NFT there. For some time now, video game companies have been joining the craze for this blockchain technology, with which they intend to sell so-called non-fungible tokens. While Square Enix had already declared its interest in delving into this technology, Ubisoft jumped straight in with its own products. Now, SEGA has registered the SEGA NFT trademark in Japan. According to the information, this was done in December 2021.

SEGA had previously indicated its interest in entering this market. However, CEO Haruki Satomi acknowledged the negativity among the gaming community. “With NFT, we would like to try various things, and we have started to look into it,” he said. According to his own statements, nothing has been decided yet.

The president reviewed the current situation and explained that there had been many announcements about NFTs around the world, but there are users who react negatively. Therefore, the goal is to “carefully evaluate” methods to mitigate this kind of reaction while investigating whether users will accept the technology. “We will move forward with NFTs if they help us fulfil our philosophy: to constantly create and captivate the player.”

Satomi pointed out that if the community perceives NFT as solely a source of making money, then they would rather not proceed with their plans. Will they seek feedback or try their luck? Currently, they have not detailed how they will do this or whether they will eventually greenlight projects in this particular direction.

When Stalker 2 detailed its NFT roadmap, gamers reacted with such negativity that the studio was forced to back out just hours after announcing it. In the case of Ubisoft Quartz, even the developers have questioned the modus operandi of the blockchain technology, although the French company will continue to go for it.
