The Quarry: An Ingenious “Death Rewind” Mechanism Included In The Game?!

The director of the upcoming horror game The Quarry talked about the length of an average playthrough and the new “Death Rewind” mechanic.

Supermassive Games recently announced that they would be working with publisher 2K Games on The Quarry. The game has been described as the spiritual successor to the infamous Until Dawn, which was a spectacular success when it was released in 2015 as a Sony and PS4 console exclusive. Like Until Dawn and many other projects from Supermassive Games, The Quarry is a cinematic horror adventure game inspired by teen slasher and other horror genres.

With the game set to release in about a month, director Will Byles gave an interview to SegmentNext to discuss some of the aspects players can expect in the upcoming adventure.

One of the first questions was how the story would be handled, given that The Quarry offers multiple endings depending on the choices made.

Byles noted that one of the biggest challenges he encountered in writing the game was keeping track of where all nine central characters are in the game, as well as the possible choices that could impact the narrative. He also had to ensure that the story of The Quarry would continue even if one of the characters died.

Byles was also asked about a new mechanic that will be added to The Quarry’s gameplay, and that is the “Death Rewind” system. Byles describes this as a reset mechanic that gives the player three “lives” to avoid the death of a character. If the player uses one of these lives, they go back to the moment they were faced with the critical decision that led to the character’s death and can choose something else.

He notes that this system will only be available once the player completes the game’s storyline or purchases The Quarry Deluxe Edition.

One of the last questions asked was about the length of The Quarry, precisely how long it is expected to take to complete a playthrough. Byles notes that the playthrough length is ultimately up to the player but that it should take around ten hours to complete the story. However, he adds that the game is designed to be very replayable, as some players may be curious about the alternate routes and choices available, so fans will have a lot to explore after seeing the story for the first time.

The Quarry will be released on 10 June for PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One and Xbox Series X/S.
