Prince of Persia Remake Changes Developer

Ubisoft has confirmed that the upcoming remake of Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time, originally released early last year, will be changing developers.

Ubisoft officially announced the Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time remake in 2020, with plans to release the game in early 2021. However, fans were not impressed by the unveiling trailer and many criticised the game for its art style and graphics. Ubisoft has finally postponed the Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time Remake indefinitely. It’s now mid-2022 and the game still has no release date, but a new studio is already working on it.

Previously, Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time Remake was being developed by Ubisoft Mumbai and Ubisoft Pune, but is now being developed by Ubisoft Montreal. Ubisoft Montreal, for the uninitiated, is one of Ubisoft’s premier studios, leading the development of blockbuster games like Assassin’s Creed Valhalla and the original Prince of Persia trilogy. The announcement explained that Ubisoft Montreal will “build on” the work done in Mumbai and Pune.

The change of developer for Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time Remake is seen as a sign that the game’s development has been a mess behind the scenes. This was already pretty obvious with the delay in the release date of Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time Remake, but now it’s more obvious than ever.

Hopefully Ubisoft Montreal can get the project back on track. Ubisoft Montreal has a proven track record of developing and delivering games on time, so we have to imagine that keeping The Sands of Time Remake on track will be a big help. Whether the game will be released this fiscal year, as Ubisoft previously indicated, is another matter entirely, especially since the announcement mentions that the team is “repositioning the scope of the game”.

It should also be noted that Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time Remake is, of course, not the only game in development at Ubisoft Montreal. The studio is also working on the free-to-play Roller Champions, and a new Assassin’s Creed game is likely in the works. With all of this in mind, it’s hard to say how much of Ubisoft Montreal’s resources will be devoted to completing Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time Remake, so fans should continue to keep their expectations in check.

Whenever a new Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time Remake trailer is released, it will be interesting to see if it is more warmly received than the initial reveal. Ubisoft hasn’t announced any major game launches or events, so unfortunately there’s no word on exactly when fans will be able to see the game again.

Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time Remake is coming to PC, PS4 and Xbox One.
