28 Days Later Can Finally Get Another Sequel?!

MOVIE NEWS – It seems writer Alex Garland has an idea for the third film in the 28 Days/Weeks Later franchise.

28 Days Later, writer Alex Garland believes it is “possible” to make a third film in the franchise and has revealed that he has a “really cool” and “much bigger” idea for a sequel. Speaking to Yahoo Entertainment’s Kevin Polowy, Garland, whose next film, Men, is due out later this month. In the interview, he revealed that he and 28 Days Later director Danny Boyle often talk about the possibility of a third instalment, but he hasn’t found the motivation to move forward, at least for now.

Garland did reveal that he has an idea for a third part, although he wouldn’t go into details…

A sequel to 28 Days Later (presumably titled 28 Months Later or something to that effect) would have a lot to cover, as the last film, 28 Weeks Later, was released back in 2007. Garland revealed that he has an idea for a third part, and while he wouldn’t show the details, for now, it’s enough to know that he has a plan that he thinks would be worthy of a sequel.

“I have got a really cool idea for it, but it’s a much bigger movie, and one of the things about 28 Days Later is that it was small and punk and this idea is less small and punk. But me and Danny speak about it. Every couple of years it will come up, or going, ‘Do you want to do that?’ and then for some reason it never happens.”

As Garland admits, it would be challenging to have the same impact as the first film did.

“A long time has passed and 28 Days Later, when it arrived [it was] fresh, and I don’t think it’s fresh anymore,” the filmmaker pointed out.

“I think it actually, speaking of conversations, 28 Days Later joined the zombie conversation, that genre. It did its thing, which is great. It was nice to be part of that, really.”

If Alex Garland does end up picking up a pen, 28 Days Later star Cillian Murphy recently revealed that he’d love to return for a third zombie adventure. “I would never say never,” Murphy said in May last year. “I loved to make that movie. Was a long time ago. But sure [I would like to return].” Let’s hope Garland’s bigger vision includes a return for Cillian Murphy.

Men, written and directed by Alex Garland, is scheduled to hit theatres in the U.S. on May 20, distributed by A24.
