Thirty-Year-Old Mystery Solved In Return To Monkey Island!

Guybrush Threepwood’s first adventure, The Secret of Monkey Island, had the faces of three unknown pirates on its cover, and we’ve never known anything about them since…

Ron Gilbert, creator of The Secret of Monkey Island, can’t help but surprise us, and since the announcement of Return to Monkey Island in April as a teaser, he’s given us a few clues as to what we might find in the long-awaited return of the legendary adventure game franchise.

One of the classic secrets of the series has to do with the cover of the first Monkey Island, which features three pirates escorting the good Guybrush Threepwood and Elaine Marley. However, these three mysterious pirates never appeared in the game, nor in later instalments, but it seems that the truth about the three good guys is finally being revealed.

“Fun Fact: These three pirates appear in Return to Monkey Island” – Ron Gilbert

Ron Gilbert himself shared an amusing anecdote on his Twitter account, admitting that the presence of the three pirates on the cover of the original 1990 title became so annoying that he decided to include them in the new video game in the series.

This promises to be one of the many mysteries Gilbert plans to solve in Terrible Toybox. Although Guybrush Threepwood’s new adventures will arrive on PC later this year, if the makers keep up the pace of revealing their secrets, there may be nothing new to offer at launch… (well, knowing Gilbert, the chances of that are slim).
