A YouTuber Managed to Obtain a PlayStation 5 Dev Kit and Showed it Right Away [VIDEO]

A YouTuber managed to obtain a dev kit that looks like a PlayStation 5 and delved into its design and features in a video.

A YouTube channel called Macho Nacho Productions seems to have obtained a PlayStation 5 dev kit and produced a video in which it takes a close look at the console. PlayStation fans may recall that in the year leading up to the launch of the PlayStation 5, there were plenty of leaks claiming to have seen the PS5 dev kit in the wild. Now that the PS5 has been available for almost two years, it might be less exciting, but getting a closer look at the device is still interesting.

The shape of the PS5 dev kit will be instantly recognizable to those who followed the development of the console before its release. It is large and has a large “V” shape cut into the top half. The system’s glossy black front panel features various USB ports and flashing lights to indicate various settings. The rest of the console is clad in silver plastic with open vents for ventilation. However, the shell of the PS5 dev kit is already familiar. The most exciting thing is what’s inside and what runs on it.

Tito from Macho Nacho Productions states in advance that the PS5 dev kit has not been activated. PS5 dev kits are for developers, and a YouTube channel shouldn’t have one. After turning on the PS5, Tito reviews the details presented on the front of the dev-kit, and then turns on the SoC (system-on-chip). The dev console launches like a regular PS5, but with a unique developer UI that only slightly resembles the regular PS5 UI. This is the point where, according to Tito, not much can be done without Sony activating the dev kit.

From there, Tito walks you through the dev kit’s menus and settings and shows you how you can activate it to make it work. The video ends with a big “surprise”: Tito reveals what’s inside the panel at the bottom of the console. This is, unsurprisingly, an NVMe port for an M.2 SSD. There is currently no SSD installed, but it would allow developers to expand the dev kit’s already impressive 2.2TB of storage.

Overall, this initial video doesn’t reveal much about the PS5 dev kit. They refer to more videos in which Tito will perform a teardown of the dev kit. He will obviously not activate the dev kit with Sony, as he is not a developer, so it is unlikely that he will have anything further to do with the platform.

It’s unclear how the PS5 dev kit got into the hands of a YouTuber, and Tito certainly isn’t offering any answers. It’s also unclear whether Sony will be satisfied with Tito posting videos of the PS5 dev kit online. It might not be online for long, but it’s an interesting video in comparison.
