PUBG Battlegrounds publisher Krafton has recently announced a new game based on the fantasy novel series The Bird That Drinks Tears. The new game, part of a project formerly known as Project Windless, was announced via what Krafton called an “official concept trailer” video. The trailer’s focus was to provide a cinematic experience that captures the aesthetic and tone of the new game, which it certainly succeeded in doing.

The new game is being made by Krafton’s Team Windless and is still very much in the early stages of development.

This is not the first time that Team Windless has talked about their work at Krafton. Project Windless was previously announced as a multimedia collaboration. The four-volume Korean novel series The Bird That Drinks Tears was launched with concept artist Iain McCaig and his team Team Windless.

Magával ragadó történetek és elsöprő játékélmény találkozik a dél-koreai fantasy regény adaptációjában, amibe a Krafton belevágott.

While the trailer doesn’t reveal much about the gameplay, it’s easy to imagine what’s in store. Dark fantasy games like The Witcher and Dark Souls are popular, and Krafton may be looking to replicate their success. The Witcher is, after all, based on a series of dark fantasy books, but the trailer for the Team Windless project suggests that the emphasis here will be on the action rather than RPG elements.

Previous commentaries by concept artist Iain McCaig provide more details on the project.

According to McCaig, the story of The Bird That Drinks Tears is “full of monsters and nightmarish things, and that half the time those are the good guys.” But behind the brutality, McCaig explains, lies a lot of humour, absurdity and intelligence.

If the developers aimed to appeal to a younger, more enthusiastic gaming audience, this new trailer certainly hits the mark. After all, it worked for The Callisto Project, another Krafton game. But there’s still a lot of work to be done to showcase the fantastic world behind the violence, not to mention the story of The Bird That Drinks Tears that inspired it.
