x0r_jmp isn’t just leaking about Duke Nukem (they’ve been leaking, and they’re almost certainly not done yet).
Last year, they first published an E3-ready version of Duke Nukem Forever 2001 (we wrote about that), then the 2010 Duke Nukem movie concept, the 1996 side-scrolling Duke Nukem 4Ever, the hunting-focused Duke Nukem: Endangered Species, and Duke Nukem 3D: Reloaded (the remake planned for Unreal Engine 3), which was in development at Interceptor Entertainment and essentially canceled due to Gearbox’s selfishness (and we wrote about them in a bunch last week).
In the mid-90s, not only Duke Nukem 3D used the Build Engine, but also Blood, developed by Monolith (yes, the studio that later created F.E.A.R., followed by Middle-Earth: Shadow of Mordor and Middle-Earth: Shadow of War!). This game was similarly fast-paced, had labyrinth-like maps, and its weapons were pretty unique: the dynamite stick was nothing, but the flamethrower, a combination of hairspray and a lighter, sounds interesting, especially as it had a gothic, horror-like atmosphere, making the game reasonably popular.
This time, it’s not such big news that the source code is out on the net because NBlood and Raze from Blood are great source ports. Instead, the archive gives a glimpse into the past, so you can see the creative and technical processes of Monolith, as the Blood.txt file contains patch notes on the slowly building game going back to January 1995, and something is charming about the way the project went from concept to finish line. The text file outlines it for the reader.
If anyone would like to read about the history of the game’s development, please visit x0r_jmp Rentry.co page. There, you will also find the Duke Nukem stuff listed. It’s a pleasant surprise because you rarely see anything like it.
