The Last of Us: Will the Second Season Not Include the Whole Game’s Story?

MOVIE NEWS – The first season of The Last of Us has ended, but Joel and Ellie’s adventure is not over yet. The second season will cover the events of The Last of Us: Part 2, but it seems that this will not be as simple as adapting the first part was.

The first season of HBO’s series followed the story of The Last of Us: Part 1, a game in which Joel and Ellie travel across America in a world infected by zombies to reach a rebel group that might be able to save humanity. The second part takes place five years later and shows the consequences of Joel and Ellie’s decisions at the end of the previous game.

Fans have been wondering for a long time how the series will handle the second part. Will the same actors play Ellie and Joel? Will they fit the entire game’s story into one season? How faithful will the series be to the game?

There are no exact answers to these questions yet, but we do know some things for sure. The creators of the series Neil Druckmann and Craig Mazin said in an interview that they will need more than one season to fully explore the story of The Last of Us: Part 2. However, they did not reveal how many seasons they are thinking of.

“You have noted correctly that we will not say how many. But more than one is factually correct” – said Mazin.

Mazin also hinted that there will be more encounters with zombies in the second season.

“…we learned by watching how the audience watches the show. I personally noticed how much they liked those encounters. And I think we have some really interesting things planned that will be very satisfying without burying you.”

In addition to this, Mazin and Druckmann talked about how they differ from the game. As they did in the first season, they will make some changes in the second season that fit better with a television series than a video game. Both of them emphasized their commitment to impactful, character-driven storytelling and their willingness to give up some of the memorable scenes from the game if they serve the characters’ development better.

When asked what scenes were missing from the first season, Mazin mentioned as an example that there was no hotel basement scene from The Last of Us: Part 1, which was a terrifying part of the game, but it did not work as well when it was presented as part of a TV series because there was not enough character interaction.

There is still not much information about the length of the series but fans can be sure that The Last of Us season 2 will not be limited by trying to squeeze a huge game like The Last of Us: Part 2 into nine one-hour episodes.
