Following rumours of a change of direction regarding the upcoming Witcher multiplayer spin-off, CD Projekt Red has clarified the status of Project Sirius.

After some conflicting reports, CD Projekt Red has now clarified the status of the upcoming Witcher multiplayer project. Late last year, CDPR announced several spin-off games for the Witcher franchise. Among them was a game tentatively titled “Project Sirius”. Not much is known about Project Sirius yet, but initial reports suggest that it will include multiplayer elements in addition to the usual single-player experience. The Molasses Flood, a Boston-based subsidiary of CDPR, will develop the game.

However, CD Projekt Red has since provided an update to Project Sirius that has called into question the title’s future.

In an investor report last month, CDPR announced that it would “define a new framework” for Sirius. This suggested that development would be redirected towards the declared multiplayer elements. This led many to conclude that Project Sirius may be scrapped altogether. Especially after the divisive reception of recent multiplayer-focused titles such as Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League.

CD Projekt Red president and joint CEO Adam Kicinski recently clarified the status of Project Sirius. During a recent Q&A yesterday (via IGN), he stated that while the multiplayer Witcher game is being taken in a different direction, it hasn’t been cancelled entirely. He added that while the recent devaluation was a “tough decision to make”, it was the right one for the project. “Our intention was to cut costs early and give ourselves time for reassessment. We don’t want to carry on with projects that we are not aligned with.” Nevertheless, CDPR is committed to Project Sirius. Their aim is to bring the Witcher franchise to new audiences.

Project Sirius is by no means the only new game CDPR is working on, as several other titles set in the world of The Witcher and Cyberpunk 2077 were announced at the same presentation where Sirius was unveiled.

It will be an exciting time for fans of The Witcher. Gamers can rest assured that the multiplayer-focused Project Sirius will continue despite the announced change of direction. Only time will tell if this new direction will succeed for the currently untitled Witcher spin-off. Many details remain under wraps, but we will know more soon.
