The Witcher: The Multiplayer Game In Development Might Have Troubles?!

Although CDPR has been relatively quiet about The Witcher multigame so far, a recent update may hint at a possible change of direction for the project.

According to a recent report, CD Projekt Red’s multiplayer game based on The Witcher may already be undergoing significant changes. The multiplayer title, known as Project Sirius, was announced by CDPR in October 2022.

Since the first game’s debut, The Witcher has gained immense popularity over the years, fuelled mainly by the appeal of Episode 3 and the Netflix series.

In its report to investors, CDPR mentions that it has recorded an impairment loss on The Molasses Flood Project Sirius. The company is working on a “new framework” for the Witcher multiplayer game. The company also claims that the project has already consumed PLN 33.4 million (USD 7.61 million) during 2022 and a further PLN 9.5 million (USD 2.16 million) in the first few months of 2023.

No specific details were given as to what this means. But the report suggests that Project Sirius may be scrapping its current format due to financial concerns and looking for a new multiplayer approach. Of course, it’s worth noting that the game’s multiplayer component will come alongside the single-player campaign. So it is likely that the redesign will include both elements. It is possible that the focus may shift even more towards the multiplayer component.

This change in direction comes just a few months after CDPR hinted at a possible multiplayer co-op and PvE feature for Project Sirius via a job posting. A job posting for a Senior Multiplayer Designer provided some info.

Either way, it will be a while before CDPR officially informs fans what to expect from the multiplayer experience.

It’s no secret that the company has been exploring the live-action space with its IPs over the years. Previously, the much-talked-about Cyberpunk 2077 was initially intended to have a multiplayer mode. However, the studio eventually scrapped the idea. It will be interesting to see how the company will navigate the space.
