The Legend Of Zelda: Tears Of The Kingdom Sets The Bar High For The Switch Successor

The post-Switch platform must prepare if the new Zelda will be a compelling and graphically stunning game.

The Nintendo Switch is six years old by any standard. It’s almost time for a successor, and there have been plenty of rumors about it. One of them was that The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom would be some kind of a launch title on the Nintendo Switch Pro, just like The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild was for the Switch back in the day (even if a Wii U port of it was released on the same day). Ultimately, that won’t happen because the new Zelda is due in less than two weeks, and the big N isn’t going to suddenly launch a new piece of hardware (the collector’s edition Tears of the Kingdom-patterned Switch is NOT one of them).

Although two other variants of the Nintendo Switch have been released (in addition to the redesigned version, the non-dockable Switch Lite, and the different displayed Switch OLED with a larger screen and dock), we still haven’t heard anything official about the Switch’s successor. Still, the Japanese company may be present at Gamescom in August for this reason. The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom tricks the Switch’s hardware limitations: fog and clouds obscure drawing distance, and cel-shaded graphics can hide the “patchy parts.”

Nintendo could have followed the example of the previous game and made The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom a launch title, but since that’s not the case, the future of the Switch depends on the quality of Nintendo’s homework. If the game runs decently and at a good resolution, then the Switch still has some power left, but if it lags or even gets a little ugly here and there, then it’s safe to say that the Switch has had its day.

The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom will be released on Nintendo Switch on May 12.
