Warner Bros. Discovery’s CEO has been not-so-veiled about the possibility of game adaptations of these two IPs.
On Friday, Warner Bros. Discovery’s fiscal quarterly report for the first three months of 2023 was made. David Zaslav, the company’s CEO, briefly mentioned their involvement in the gaming industry. He says it’s helpful that Warner owns all the rights, and that this should help them work from their IPs so they can create whatever they want. That way, they don’t have to deal with the legal hassle of not getting the consent of other parties.
“We may be the only media company that owns (whether it be the DC universe, Harry Potter, or Game of Thrones) all the content we own, that’s for us to deploy. I think that’s particularly important strategically. When we launch a product on Max or HBO and have a game, that game belongs to us, but now there’s this in-betweener. It may be in the next couple of years that we launch a Superman movie, and people spend more time, and there’s more economics of people just hanging out in the Superman world and universe,” Zaslav said.
The Superman movie Zaslav was referring to will be the work of James Gunn and will be called Superman: Legacy. There will probably be a game adaptation to go with it. If you think about it, there have been very few times in recent years when a game has been released alongside a movie, usually at the same time, but it should be added that most of the time, it has been average or below-average quality.
Although Zaslav’s comment does not confirm that Warner Bros. Discovery is planning to do something like this, last year, DC Studios co-CEO James Gunn said he was planning to make games that would tie into the new era of the DC Universe. In the case of Superman, however, the last time he starred in a game where he didn’t share the lead role with anyone else was in 2006 (Superman Returns), but that was also made to accompany a movie. In the case of Game of Thrones, it was a Telltale adaptation in 2014, but apart from that, there are only mobile games now.
We’ll see how things roll out.
