Alicia Vikander Heartbroken Over Cancelled Tomb Raider Sequel – But It’s Not Over Yet!

MOVIE NEWS – Alicia Vikander, the star of Tomb Raider, was utterly devastated when the anticipated sequel was ultimately cancelled. But, there’s still hope for the franchise.

Alicia Vikander, the lead actress of the 2018 film adaptation of the iconic game Tomb Raider, was left disheartened when the eagerly awaited sequel was eventually cancelled. This adaptation followed the earlier 2001 version, where the character was brought to life by Angelina Jolie. In the film, our protagonist Lara embarks on a mission to locate her father, all the while exploring locations filled with ancient artifacts.

Even though the film managed to garner a global box office collection of $274 million, it fell short of giving MGM the confidence to dive headfirst into the sequel.

In an interview with Variety, Vikander revealed her disappointment when MGM didn’t greenlight Tomb Raider 2 in time to retain the rights. A sequel was in development, but it never progressed beyond that stage. The rights are now securely with Amazon.

Vikander’s quote was as follows: “I mean, I thought we were very much [good to go]; we had a director and writer. But yeah, for me, that was another one of those childhood dreams — to portray an action character was awesome, and beyond what I ever thought I would do. And I think the physical part is something that I really enjoyed. So, yeah, if another opportunity like that came again, I’ll be interested.”

While Vikander might be disappointed, the end of the Tomb Raider reboot does not mean the end of game adaptations. Amazon is planning a new Tomb Raider film, which should be the beginning of a shared universe. It will be followed by a Tomb Raider show and a related video game, aimed at broadening Lara’s world and perspectives.

In summary, while the conclusion of the Tomb Raider reboot might be a disappointment for Vikander, it does not spell the end of the franchise. Amazon, the current rights holder for the game adaptation, seems to have big plans for the future. They’re reportedly planning a new Tomb Raider film, to be complemented by a Tomb Raider show and a related video game.

These moves aim not only to further expand the boundaries of the franchise but also to open up new avenues for stories yet to be told. The new era of the Tomb Raider franchise is likely to remain alive and kicking, even if Vikander, beloved and admired in the role of Lara Croft, will no longer be a part of future projects.
