Xbox Series: Did Microsoft Make A Mistake? Sales Data Revealed!

Microsoft hasn’t released its console sales figures for almost a decade, but this time, the Redmond-based company did, and knowing them, it was a mistake…

Recently, Sony and Microsoft have made mistakes in court (the latter not only made a mistake in redacting documents but also in having one of their lawyers call The Elder Scrolls VI 16… they must have played a lot of Final Fantasy XVI!) but now, the tech giant, which has essentially unlimited money to spend coming via Windows and Office sales, has made a mistake elsewhere. The company gave a presentation at the BIG Festival in Brazil (the event runs from June 28 to July 2) and, as expected, on Twitter, @LucasTaves posted a slide from Microsoft’s presentation.

The pictures have three stats. 48% of Xbox Series S gamers are new to Xbox, there have been over 79 million Xbox One and Xbox Series sales, and Microsoft has sold over 21 million units of the two Xbox Series models! This is a new figure; from it, you can calculate that the Xbox One (and Xbox One X) has around 58 million sales. The previous generation of consoles left the sales channels in 2020, so Xbox One sales may have sold-through numbers (consoles sold to consumers).

Last September, Xbox CEO Phil Spencer said that Asia had seen significant Xbox console player growth, so the 48% “newcomer rate” could be described as authentic, as it was mainly the Xbox Series S that won the public’s favor there (in Japan, mainly due to the console’s size), with more than half of sales there being to new Xbox owners.

As for Sony sales, we have it directly from them: the PlayStation 5 was at 38.4 million at the end of March. Hence, the ratio between the two companies is around 60-40 in favor of the ‘blues,’ we’ve heard that the Xbox Series outsold the PS5 in the first three months of 2021, so that gap will likely widen in Sony’s favor.
