One Of The Best PlayStation 5 Launch Titles Could Get A Sequel?!

One of the PlayStation 5’s highest-rated launch titles could well be getting some kind of sequel in the foreseeable future.

Sony recently filed trademarks for Astro Bot, suggesting that a new game in the franchise could be in the works. Sony’s Astro series has so far been used primarily as a technical demo of the company’s hardware. It started with The Playroom, which showed off the capabilities of the PlayStation Camera and PS4’s DualShock 4 controller. It continued with the Astro Bot Rescue Mission for the original PlayStation VR headset. The latest game in the series is Astro’s Playroom, which was released as a bundled launch title for the PlayStation 5.

Astro’s Playroom is a short but sweet 3D platform game that primarily aims to highlight all the unique features of the PlayStation 5’s DualSense controller.

Astro’s Playroom received rave reviews at launch. Many praised the clever use of the DualSense controller and the many ways in which it pays homage to PlayStation’s past.

Luckily for those who enjoyed Astro’s Playroom, it looks like a new game in the series is in the works. Sony has filed a new trademark in Europe for Astro’s Bot. This suggests that they still have plans for the franchise. However, there is no other information to share at the moment. It is possible that these plans could include a full-fledged traditional game based on cute robot characters. But it’s also possible that a sequel to the VR game Astro Bot Rescue Mission is in the works instead. Ultimately, fans will just have to watch to see exactly what Sony does with the trademark. It’s entirely possible that they do nothing with it, and the Astro Bot franchise continues to lie dormant.

While it’s not yet known whether or not there will be a new Astro Bot game, fans can expect developer Team Asobi to deliver some sort of new project. Team Asobi’s next project is said to be their biggest yet, although it is yet to be revealed whether or not the game will feature Astro Bot characters.

All of Team Asobi’s games so far have featured some form of Astro Bot characters, so it wouldn’t be at all surprising if the next game continues that tradition.

Since the launch of The Playroom in 2013, the team has been releasing a new project every few years. The Playroom VR was released in 2016, followed by Astro Bot Rescue Mission in 2018. Naturally, Astro’s Playroom was released in 2020 to coincide with the release of the PS5 console. According to this schematic, fans are due for a new Team Asobi game, though perhaps the fact that the new game is the biggest the studio has made to date has set things back a little.
