MOVIE NEWS – Lily Gladstone, who plays a prominent role in Martin Scorsese’s upcoming film Killers of the Flower Moon, has expressed her disdain for the popular series Yellowstone, starring Kevin Costner. She accused the show of being a “hallucination” and a “disgrace” that distorts the history and reality of the American West.

Yellowstone follows the saga of the Dutton family, who own a large cattle ranch in Montana and face various threats from outsiders. The series has been praised for its cinematography, acting, and storytelling, but Gladstone, a Native American from the Blackfeet tribe, has a different perspective.

In an interview with Variety, she said Yellowstone presents a false and idealized image of the Wild West, as classic Hollywood imagined it. She said that the show ignores the contemporary issues and struggles of Native Americans, who are often marginalized and exploited in their own lands.

Gladstone contrasted Yellowstone with Scorsese’s film, which is based on a true story of a series of murders that took place in Oklahoma in the 1920s. The victims were members of the Osage tribe, who had become wealthy from the oil deposits under their territory. The killers were mostly white men who wanted to take over their fortunes, and the authorities were reluctant to investigate or prosecute them.

Gladstone praised Scorsese for his authentic and respectful portrayal of the Osage people and culture. She said that he spent months living in the town where the events occurred, and consulted with the local Osage community about how to depict them in his film. “He was genuinely curious about what they thought about this story and asked for their opinions on how they thought the Osage should be portrayed,” she said.

Gladstone plays Mollie Burkhart, an Osage woman who married a white man and became one of the targets of the killers. She stars alongside Robert De Niro and Leonardo DiCaprio, who play two federal agents who try to solve the case. The film is expected to be a strong contender for the Oscars this year.

Killers of the Flower Moon will premiere on October 19, 2023.
