House of the Dragon Season 2 release date has received a major update from HBO. It has been revealed what awaits the series in the future and approximately when the sequel may arrive.

House of the Dragon, inspired by George R.R. Martin’s novel Fire and Blood, is a gripping Game of Thrones prequel in which we immerse ourselves in the world of Westeros 172 years before the emergence of Daenerys Targaryen.

The series chronicles the decline of the Targaryen dynasty. The first season ended with the shocking death of King Viserys. This unleashed a vortex of turmoil within House Targaryen. The ruling family struggles with the fateful question of who should rightfully occupy the Iron Throne: Princess Rhaenyra or Prince Aegon.

As reported by Variety, HBO network head Casey Bloys made the exciting announcement at a recent press event in New York. Fans of House of the Dragon can already look forward to the premiere of the second season. This, as we know, will air in the early summer of 2024. So, the date did not have to be moved compared to what Bloys announced back in February. At the press event, the participants had an exclusive screening of the first trailer for the 2nd season of House of the Dragon. However, specific details from the recording remain embargoed. The recording itself has not yet been uploaded to the Internet.

House of the Dragon broke HBO records when it hit screens from August 21 to October 23, 2022. After the sensational series premiere, HBO quickly gave the green light for the second season, already on August 26, 2022. The series’ creators presciently completed the script for the next season quite early. Filming began on April 11, 2023, at Warner Bros. Leavesden Studios. It is also worth noting that the filming of the 2nd season was completed in September 2023. Most actors were not contractually affiliated with SAG-AFTRA but with the British Equity Actors Guild.

This paid off as they avoided the industry-wide disruptions caused by the Writers Guild of America strike (May through September) and the SAG-AFTRA strike (beginning July 14).

Season 2 director Clare Kilner has confirmed that the new season will be shortened to 8 episodes. However, Kilner also promised they would be “full of emotion and visually exciting events”. So fans have a lot to look forward to when Season 2 of the series premieres.
