Far Cry 7: It Should Return To The Third Game In One Aspect

It’s almost certain that a new Far Cry is in the works (because Ubisoft isn’t going to just stop an IP that’s been around for almost two decades…), it’s just a matter of time before it’s announced.

The first part of the franchise was released in 2004 and has since become a AAA open world FPS. The second part was technologically excellent, but the French publisher tweaked the formula again with the third part in 2012, using the world map in several parts after that, and the formula around Far Cry slowly got tired. Far Cry 3 was good story-wise, but it was the character of the main villain that made it legendary. (The second part [The Jackal] was memorable, but he turned out to be the protagonist of the first part!)

Vaas Montenegro (played by Michael Mando) was a fantastic villain and is still remembered by many today. Ubisoft built on this by putting a lot of emphasis on the main villains in the later episodes, with increasingly poor results. Pagan Min, voiced by Troy Baker in Far Cry 4, wasn’t bad, and the secret ending where we stayed in the dining room when he asked us to at the beginning of the game was even funny; in Far Cry 5, Greg Bryk voiced Joseph Seed, but was less of a draw, and Giancarlo Espositora’s Antón Castillo in Far Cry 6 continued to go downhill because he wasn’t given much time to shine…

Vaas’ character was complex and intense, and his philosophy tended towards nihilism. Sometimes he acted quite aggressively, and his plans were impossible… so it’s no wonder that we might even think of the Joker from Batman. (Maybe a combination of Jack Nicholson’s elegance and Heath Ledger’s madness…?) Maybe Ubisoft has set the bar too high, and in Far Cry 7 we’ll once again be up against a team similar to the Seed cult in FC5… But Ubisoft risks that none of them will be convincing enough.
