Is Sony Building A New Studio With Ex-Deviation Games Employees?

There are rumors that Sony is planning to create a new team, which is interesting because the gaming industry is cutting back everywhere…

Sony plans to use former employees of Deviation Games in California. This includes co-founder Jason Blundell, who was previously a producer and creative director at Treyarch and worked on Call of Duty. Deviation Games was founded in 2020 under Blundell and Dave Anthony after their departure from Activision Blizzard, and was announced to be working on a new IP with PlayStation, but that’s all we’ve heard about them apart from Blundell leaving the studio last September…

Zuby_Tech, a gaming industry leaker on Twitter, shared the LinkedIn profiles of several former Deviation employees and believes that Blundell is now working on an unannounced project for Sony Interactive Entertainment. He has several people from Deviation working with him (Pat Dwyer – ex-executive producer, Fred Thompson – ex-design director, Adam Rosas – ex-animation director, Kristen Sych – ex-principal animator). They all joined PlayStation Studios around the same time (a few months ago) and Thompson is said to be leading the design of an unannounced project, but it’s not yet clear if the game will be one of Sony’s ten Live Service projects to be released by 2026.

Zuby_Tech also shared the LinkedIn profile of JC Farmer. He was previously a community manager at Deviation Games, but according to a tweet he is back at PlayStation Studios working with Blundell as a junior game designer. This also confirms rumors that Sony has set up a new in-house studio that has yet to be announced. So what are they working on? Given Blundell’s Call of Duty experience, we’d guess a shooter, as there aren’t many FPSs among the PlayStation exclusives.

Sony probably set up a studio like this to offer more media content. It also bought Bungie for $3.6 billion to enter the live service market and strengthen its multiplatform presence. Firewalk Studios was purchased in April and is developing a live service title for PlayStation 5 and PC.
