DOOM Eternal: Official Mod Support Coming Soon?

This will give id Software’s game even more attention from the public.

In 2018, id Software mentioned that the shooter would officially receive mod support. Then, in the spring of 2020, Doom Slayer’s adventure was released, but mod support was nowhere to be found. We’ve gone through the pandemic and still nothing. Meanwhile, the studio’s parent company ZeniMax Media has been taken over by Microsoft, and maybe that’s why id Software is finally getting to the point where they’re keeping their word, even though they said so two years before the game’s release.

On SteamDB you can see a modification that refers to DoomModPortal.exe. This indicates that a mod portal will be added to DOOM Eternal in the near future. This change was made two days ago and no announcement has been made yet. So far there is no hint about this mod portal. It was promised in 2018 by director Marty Stratton that they are currently planning to do this, but it was already important to him and Roberty Duffy, who was the CTO of id Software.

There’s no shortage of unofficial mods out there, like one that makes the particle effects prettier, or one that removes the red filter from the screen if you’re low on HP. But there are many more; the point is that they are not officially supported by id Software and Bethesda (or Microsoft, if they own the publisher, as Activision Blizzard does).

If an official mod portal becomes a reality, think of the potential that DOOM Eternal would have. How great would it be if the first two DOOMs were re-created on id Tech’s engine? Given the franchise’s huge fanbase, we can almost guarantee that this will happen at some point (if it hasn’t already), and with Microsoft behind it, it will be interesting to see how much the life of the already popular game will be extended.

Can they get mod support for consoles? That would be an excellent move by the developers, wouldn’t it?
