Assassin’s Creed Shadows: You Can Stick to One Protagonist for Most of the Time

If you want to control only Naoe or Yasuke throughout the story, the next installment of the franchise will give you that option.

Simon Lemay-Comtois, Associate Director of Assassin’s Creed Shadows, told GamesRadar in an interview that the exploration gameplay loop will specifically make it feel like you’re in the role of Sherlock Holmes (but don’t expect Ubisoft to immediately rival Frogwares, the Ukrainian studio known for Sherlock Holmes games lately):

“If you want to be just one character, you can do that for most of the game. So we’re not really forcing anyone to switch back and forth. There are setups that are definitely better with Naoe, like if there’s a bunch of bandits in a cave that’s very, very dark, sure you can go with Yasuke, but if you go with Naoe, it’ll be faster because it’s in the dark. So there are some clues like that, but other than the story missions that are tailor-made for one or the other, we don’t specify who has to play at this point, it’s up to the players.

We decided early on that we wanted to break the rules as much as possible in the conception of Assassin’s Creed Shadows. So we tried to change the formula as much as we could. That’s one of the places where we heard the criticism, we ourselves wanted to push the exploration to be more engaging for the player, to want to discover things rather than just sink into something and be fed information.

So it’s something new that we’re trying to build into the game. And because it works, we’ve kind of built it into all the quests and missions that you can do in the game. Now, I will say that there is still a guided mode that players can opt into, which is more classic. It will tell you where to go and stuff like that, but the basic mode, our new exploration loop, is more about playing a little bit of Sherlock Holmes and having to work for the reward at the end,” Lemay-Comtois said.

In Assassin’s Creed Shadows, out November 15 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series, PC, Mac and iPad, it’s up to the player to decide who will try to make their mark with which character.
