According to reports, Warner Bros. Discovery (WBD), the publisher, is taking a completely different stance than Rocksteady; the studio wants to do everything it can to get the public to look at them with appreciation again…
A rumor has surfaced on 4chan, which should be treated with skepticism as the site is not exactly known for its reliability, but what it says seems plausible. Rocksteady wants players to trust them again because Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League was a big flop, and the public didn’t like the fact that Batman: Arkham Shadow was going to be a VR game. But the studio is also working on a Justice League game. Graphically, it would use some assets from the failed Suicide Squad game, but this time Rocksteady wants to make a single player AAA game.
Only WBD’s position is the opposite of Rocksteady’s. According to CEO David Zaslav and the board of directors, the future lies in the game-as-a-service (GaaS) model, and they refuse to accept that Suicide Squad failed because of that model. WBD would give Rocksteady another shot. Most of the pitches submitted are more about how monetization would work in the game, so the focus is not on the gameplay and its mechanics, because that’s how greedy the publisher is. There’s also a concept for a sequel to Arkham Knight (Batman and Superman team up to form the League, but are kidnapped by Mongol on Warworld).
The monetization here would be that only Batman and Superman would be playable at launch, but Wonder Woman, Flash and Green Lantern would be playable in some other segments. All characters would be released in seasons focused on them. Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League would have Metropolis, Batman: Arkham Knight would recycle parts of Gotham City, and there would be a post-launch content expansion for Themyscira or Keystone City. If the game goes the Warworld route, these would be imitations, not the actual cities.
Right now morale at Rocksteady is very low. The developers and staff just want to make a fun game (as was the case with the Batman: Arkham titles), but WBD just refuses to budge. Rumor has it that Monolith is also struggling with its GaaS efforts. WBD is forcing the studio to rework its Wonder Woman game into a live service model, with battle passes and skins sold separately, while the game would still be single player, though you could play it with friends.
This is all unofficial, but it sounds logical…
