Something’s Gotta Pay the Bills: The Fallout: London Modding Team Turns Into an Indie Studio! [VIDEO]

Team Folon needs to make a living, and since they can’t charge for Fallout: London, which has become a huge mod for Fallout 4, it makes sense that they would take the next necessary step.

By Team Folon’s own admission, Fallout: London is “held together with duct tape. The mod has been a success (we wrote about how many people added it to their GOG accounts in one day…), but life can’t stop there. We need to plan for the next step, and that’s what Dean Carter, the project’s leader, told the BBC.

“As much as I love that it’s a free project… free doesn’t pay our bills. What has been great for us is that a lot of the people who have enjoyed it have donated to us. What we’ve done with that is we’ve channeled that into Team Folon: That’s what we’re going to do, and then hopefully we’ll start our own indie game company.

We don’t expect anything from Bethesda. We’re just fans of the project and it’s just their IP, but no, there hasn’t been any communication. Which is weird because we’ve had communication from other people in the industry, but Bethesda themselves haven’t talked to us at all, no,” Carter said.

Modding and game development are two completely different things. To do that, they would have to step up a gear and become an official development team. That means additional costs, and their first game will take a long time to make. In any case, Carter says that it would allow them to develop their own ideas and their own games, and really work with the community without having to talk to someone above them.

While it is true that Bethesda was under no obligation to reach out to Team Folon, perhaps a congratulatory note would have been in order after the mod’s release (which was delayed for months due to the sudden next-gen update for Fallout 4…). But even that was too much.
