Will Licensing Marvel Games Make Older Titles Available on Xbox? [VIDEO]

Microsoft is looking to capitalize on the success of a recently released and popular movie with some older games that are currently unavailable for official purchase.

Deadpool & Wolverine has become a blockbuster. Disney (which owns Marvel) is making a lot of money again, and as a result, there is renewed interest in the two characters. The transmedia approach in particular can make this even more financially rewarding: the success of the Amazon series Fallout has led to a surge in interest in games, and now the success of Deadpool & Wolverine has led fans to look to games.

But here’s the problem. Deadpool, which we recently wrote about not being sure was actually made with a huge budget over a decade ago, is currently unavailable in digital stores, and Marvel Ultimate Alliance is similarly unavailable. That’s the problem with digital games: if something isn’t released on disc (or if it is, it’s only for older platforms), then when its license expires, it’s removed from Steam, the PlayStation Store, or the Microsoft Store, and that’s what happened to both of Activision’s superhero games.

Activision is owned by Microsoft, so there would be no legal obstacle to re-releasing them, but Marvel owns the rights to the characters, so it’s up to Disney to decide if Microsoft can bring the two games back. This was discussed by Nick Baker (Shpeshal Nick), one of the hosts of the Xbox Era podcast. According to him, Microsoft wants to make them available on PC, Xbox Series and Xbox One after Activision lost the licenses.

The only question now is whether Disney will agree to Xbox-only releases. These games were made multiplatform back in the day, so the PlayStation may not be left out, and it may come down to that, or it may be a bookie. Activision has a lot of games that are out of reach anyway due to licensing…
