We’ve heard from developers that the Xbox Series S, which Microsoft calls the base model for the current generation of consoles, has a number of limitations. It has only 20 CUs (compute units) with a clock speed of 1.565 GHz, which can achieve a computing power of about 4 TFLOPS. In contrast, the Xbox Series X (which Redmond considers a half-generation upgrade) has 52 CUs at 1.825 GHz, delivering about 12.16 TFLOPS of processing power.
Nearly four years later, Xbox sales aren’t very good, and many are now asking what’s the point of optimizing for the Xbox Series S. Among them is Funcom’s product director Scott Junior, who in an interview with VG247 criticized the smaller Xbox and admitted that the Xbox Series S will delay the arrival of the console version compared to the PC version:
“That’s one of the reasons we’re coming out on PC first. There’s a lot of tweaking we have to do before we go to Xbox. But yeah, the Xbox Series S is a challenge. Unreal [Engine] does a lot of the work for us in a way. What we’re doing more is optimizing assets and using different technologies, whether it’s [AMD] FSR or something else, to replicate frames. We want the game to look stunning on high-end, whether you have an Nvidia GeForce RTX 3070 or RTX 4090, but we also want it to look good… I don’t think we’ve announced our minimum specs yet, but you know, powerful cards from a few years ago should be able to run the game. It should look good – it won’t be able to take advantage of the ultra-spec options, but it’ll still look nice,” Junior said.
And you can add to that what GSC Game World said about S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Heart of Chornobyl: the game can’t run at 30 FPS on the smaller Xbox yet…
