Former Rockstar Developer Says a Delay for Grand Theft Auto 6 Could Still Happen

A veteran from the GTA 4 and San Andreas development team suggests a potential delay for a much-anticipated title.

Obbe Vermeij, a veteran of Rockstar Games, has revealed that GTA 4 was delayed just four months after its original release date, hinting that a similar situation could unfold with the upcoming GTA 6.

The gaming community is buzzing with speculation about a possible delay for Grand Theft Auto 6, and last week a sudden rumor emerged on social media claiming that Rockstar Games plans to postpone its next big open-world title. Jason Schreier, however, countered these claims, saying they were false, but still reminded everyone that a release date for a game of this scale can be postponed at any time due to the complex nature of AAA game development.

Rockstar Games veteran Obbe Vermeij, who worked on GTA San Andreas, also weighed in on the rumors via his X/Twitter account. He noted that during the development of GTA 4, the company decided to delay the release by 4 months from its original date. He also hinted that we might only find out if Grand Theft Auto 6 will be delayed when we get closer to autumn 2025, specifically around May or April of next year.

“The decision to delay GTA 4 was made about 4 months before the original release date. If it’s delayed any further, it’s a tough decision to make. Rockstar probably won’t be able to determine whether they’ll make it to 2025 until May or so. Plus, GTA 6 is set to sell for 10 years, and there’s no competition to worry about. They won’t release the game until they’re 100% happy with it. It doesn’t matter what you see in the trailer,” Vermeij says, clarifying that he has “no insider information” and hasn’t “spoken to anyone.”

Take-Two Won’t Interfere with Rockstar’s Decisions

The GTA San Andreas developer also asserts that Take-Two has no involvement or influence over Rockstar’s decision-making. “Take-Two lets Rockstar make its own decisions, and I don’t see any reason for that to change now.” He further mentioned to a user that the PC port might not arrive until 2027 if the game’s release ends up being delayed.
