PlayStation 5 Pro: Is the Processor Limiting Console Performance? [VIDEO]

The half-generation update released on Thursday will at least bring the new hardware to games released for the previous console generation.

The PlayStation 5 Pro’s processor can deliver about 10% more performance than the PlayStation 5. The reason Sony didn’t put a newer processor in the console is because it would have caused compatibility issues, but it could end up being the Achilles heel of CPU-heavy titles (like Baldur’s Gate 3). Digital Foundry has taken a close look at the PlayStation 5 Pro’s processor and how it affects unpatched games with PS5 Pro support…

Cyberpunk 2077 hasn’t been patched, and it performs about as well on the PlayStation 5 Pro as the more powerful processor can deliver, but it still can’t achieve a stable 60fps frame rate. The patched titles (like Baldur’s Gate 3) aren’t much better, but at least they perform slightly better. As we wrote a few days ago, the console continues to struggle in the city (but it’s no better on PCs). According to Digital Foundry, the PlayStation 5 Pro holds its own as a mid-generation upgrade, but its aging Zen2 processor puts it behind mainstream CPUs…

The other limitation is the same as on the base model: the PlayStation 5 Pro can only do 4K/120 Hz, due to the HDMI controller. This slightly compromises the 8K output, but since the number of 8K displays and games that support the resolution is not yet very high, this is not a major issue. For PlayStation 4 titles, however, the console, which launches on November 7, has a big plus.

PlayStation 4 titles will see a number of improvements to the image enhancement feature. The post-processing upscaling filter will likely use machine learning, but only for games running at up to 1080p resolution, so you’ll get more detailed visuals. Anti-aliasing is no better, with some games experiencing slight performance degradation and others with visual glitches. However, this bodes well for future backwards compatibility, where you can run older titles with upscaling and minimal work.

The overall picture is not too bad.
