Dragon Age: The Veilguard: The Director Departs BioWare!

It seems that Dragon Age 4 didn’t quite deliver what BioWare and Electronic Arts had hoped for.

Corinne Busche has been working on Dragon Age: The Veilguard since February 2022. She has been the director of the game for about two and a half years, and since the last installment of Dragon Age went through several reboots (first conceived as a single-player game, then reworked to a live service model, then back to a single-player concept), she has been at the helm of the project for the latest concept.

However, it was first reported that Busche would be leaving BioWare in the coming weeks. The studio has a history of delivering great RPGs (Jade Empire before the Mass Effect trilogy, for example). According to Eurogamer, Dragon Age: The Veilguard’s performance (i.e. sales) in stores will not play a role in Busche’s departure, but we find that hard to believe, as the publisher happens to be the same Electronic Arts that throws two handfuls of microtransactions (Ultimate Team) into its annual sports games.

But there have been developments! Busche has confirmed to Eurogamer that he is leaving BioWare! He had received an offer to develop a new RPG, and it seemed impossible to refuse. (Was it Tencent or NetEase, one of the two Chinese companies that could acquire Busche’s services?) So BioWare, and certainly Electronic Arts, are a thing of the past.

“At its core, this was about my own fulfillment. I did what I set out to do at BioWare. Which is to come in and help right the ship. I love Dragon Age and I love BioWare, so the chance to bring the game back to a quality single-player RPG was the privilege of a lifetime. It was a hard fight, because games with such tumultuous development cycles rarely ship, and even more rarely turn out great. We, as a team, did it. And it was hard. It took a toll on me. BioWare still has a lot of work to do culturally, but I think they are on the right track now. As far as I’m concerned, my departure was voluntary, because I was presented with an opportunity that I couldn’t turn down. I don’t want to say much more right now, but you can count on it being in the CRPG space and upholding the traditions of great characters,” Busche told Eurogamer.

Good luck to her.
