“We still plan to create good sh*t,” say the creators of Days Gone. Despite the cancellation of their game, they remain hopeful about the future.
In recent days, PlayStation has been at the center of controversy, having announced the cancellation of several live-service and multiplayer projects from its partner studios. This development highlights once again how the company’s strategy in this area has faltered over the years. One of the canceled games was a project by Bend Studio, the creators of Days Gone. However, the studio has clarified that they remain steadfast and committed to creating “good shit,” softening the tone of their original colloquial phrasing.
The cancellation shocked fans who had hoped the spirit of the open-world zombie game would be reflected in Bend Studio’s next project. In early 2023, the studio even posted a job listing seeking a project manager experienced in “AAA live-service games,” suggesting the decision to cancel was likely made only recently.
Bend Studio Stands Firm and Looks to the Future
Bend Studio’s community manager Kevin McAllister addressed the situation, emphasizing that while the cancellation was a blow to morale, the team remains intact and is working on a new project under PlayStation’s guidance. “Thanks to everyone for the love and support. PS: We still plan to create good shit,” McAllister confirmed on his personal Twitter.
Nevertheless, uncertainty looms over what kind of projects the studio will deliver in the coming years, given the complexity and time required to develop large-scale games. This suggests that Bend Studio’s next release might not see the light of day until well into the next decade.
Although rumors of a Days Gone remaster have surfaced, it’s unclear whether this would be enough to maintain fan interest. The PlayStation community, which has closely followed the studio since its success with Syphon Filter and Days Gone, eagerly awaits what’s next, particularly after the high-profile shelving of a sequel to Deacon St. John’s story.
