Unannounced Warhammer RPG Reportedly Canceled by Games Workshop

It’s never good news when a game that hasn’t even been announced is canceled, but it’s especially problematic when it happens after years of development.

In 2024, Warhammer 40K: Space Marine 2 was a huge hit (and we wrote that licensor Games Workshop was already looking for the next game to be equally successful), the game was featured in Amazon’s Secret Level anthology series, and it was confirmed that a series set in the Warhammer 40K world starring Henry Cavill was in the works. It’s no surprise, then, that with the franchise booming, more games are in the works.

MP1st reported that a studio founded in 2020, Thought Pennies, is working on a game. The team was founded by Tim Erns, who previously worked on Star Wars and Final Fantasy IPs. The studio describes itself as an RPG developer on its website. They were also hit by mass layoffs in both 2023 and late 2024. The latter was more serious, as it came after a change in strategic direction by an unnamed publisher, who pulled funding from Thought Pennies, forcing the studio to cease development.

It was a multiplatform, community RPG that was never released, but according to some staff resumes, it was set in the Warhammer world. Developed using Unreal Engine 5, the game had been in development since at least 2022, forcing the team to throw away at least two years of work. According to a resume, the game was to be a co-op PvE action-RPG with unique characters and play styles. It would have included melee combat, and you would have had to fight large enemies in a dark fantasy world. No mention of Warhammer, but the definition fits.

Daniel Erickson, Chief Creative Officer at Thought Pennies, wrote on LinkedIn that the development of the game was going well and the feedback was good, but it seems that we’re waiting for the project in vain now…

Still, she likes puzzle and story-oriented games, like Sherlock Holmes: Crimes & Punishments, which is her favourite title. She also played The Sims 3, but after accidentally killing a whole sim family, swore not to play it again. (For our office address, email and phone number check out our IMPRESSUM)
