NINTENDO NEWS – The Japanese company has explained why the Switch 2 has retroactive support, and the platform’s launch video views managed to beat the PlayStation 5!
Nintendo has previously confirmed that the Switch 2 will support Switch games (and not just digitally), but until now the company hasn’t really explained why. However, a company spokesperson told Game File that this was the best direction for Nintendo to take (i.e. following Microsoft and Sony’s lead was advisable), but we’ll have to wait a little longer for the big N to reveal which titles will NOT be supported on the next-gen hardware. Perhaps the lack of support is for Labo games.
“Nintendo Switch is played by many consumers, and we decided that the best direction would be for consumers to be able to play their previously purchased Nintendo Switch software on the successor to Nintendo Switch. As a result of this thinking, Nintendo Switch 2 will play Nintendo Switch 2 exclusive games, as well as both physical and digital Nintendo Switch games. Certain Nintendo Switch games may not be supported or fully compatible with Nintendo Switch 2. Details will be announced on the Nintendo website at a later date. We have nothing further to announce on this matter. For more details on Nintendo Switch 2, please tune in to Nintendo Direct: Nintendo Switch 2 – 4.2.2025, which will air on April 2, 2025,” the spokesperson said.
The Nintendo Switch 2 reveal video on the company’s US YouTube channel has racked up more than 17 million views in less than 48 hours. That’s a feat that could surpass the PlayStation 5’s performance in 2020. In June this year, it reached around 13.3 million views in two days. The Switch reveal teaser, which has since been taken down, reached 19.5 million views in two days.
The PlayStation 5 reveal video has 44 million views and 1.6 million likes. The Switch 2 has reached nearly 1 million likes in just 48 hours, and will likely surpass the PlayStation 5 in that time. On Saturday, the Nintendo Switch 2 was the number one trending video on YouTube. On Twitter, it reached more than 40 million views on the Nintendo of America account and more than 51 million views on the Japanese N accounts. According to an analysis published by Boomberg, analyst Robin Zhu said that Nintendo is on track for 20 million sales when the Switch 2 launches.
We’ll see.
