Jason Kingsley, CEO of Rebellion, still wonders what else they could do beyond building a base.
Evil Genius was released in 2004. It was followed by a Facebook spin-off, then a mobile game, with a sequel in 2021, Evol Genius 2: World Domination. Although PCGamer’s interview is about Rebellion’s next game, Atomfall, he did touch on the possibility of Evil Genius 3. The first installment was developed by Elixir Studios, which was founded by Demis Hassabis after he left Lionhead. The studio closed in 2005, and in 2006 Rebellion acquired the studio’s IP, including the canceled version of Evil Genius 2.
“I’m not going to announce Evil Genius 3, but yeah, Evil Genius is one of those brands, one of those things I have a soft spot for. What’s absolutely hilarious is that Demis Hassabis, it was his original game, and he’s now a Nobel Prize winner in AI. Demis, if you’re ever watching this: Hi, thank you, and good luck with everything you’re doing. It’s just quite funny that he came from games into AI and he’s an incredibly powerful and knowledgeable expert in the field. The idea of simulation games with emergent properties is very much part of what we do. We’ve got quite a bit, a big back catalog, like the Lord of the Realms and Lord of Magic IP. For me, with my Modern History TV YouTube channel, which is all about medieval things and horses, I’m particularly interested in doing something medieval one day, even if it’s medieval fantasy. I’d love to do that. So that’s on the shortlist of things to explore, genres to explore.
But I love my sci-fi. I love my hardcore sci-fi as well, so Evil Genius is definitely there. But what else could we do with it other than a base-building game, I guess is the question. And what other genres could you imagine? There’s nothing in the works right now other than ideas. That sounds like nothing’s happening, but it’s not, because ideas are coming all the time. While we’re releasing Atomfall now, we’re also working on a lot of games that will come out in the next few years, and we’re also coming up with ideas for what we’re going to start in the next few years for games that will come out in more years, you know? So it’s kind of this rolling, rolling business of keeping new games coming out,” Kingsley said.
Medieval Evil Genius? Sounds interesting…
