Will Ubisoft Soon Repeat Hyper Scape’s Example?

Not many people might remember that game, but rumor has it that the French publisher is working on another battle royale game…

Insider Gaming has reported that Ubisoft is working on a new live service game after the closure of XDefiant (which is scheduled to close in June). According to the site, this game will be a battle royale and is currently codenamed Scout. The goal will probably be to capitalize on the shrinking player base of Respawn Entertainment and Electronic Arts’ Apex Legends and the fact that Ubisoft executives think there’s a hey in the market for another hero battle royale game.

Of course, this isn’t Ubisoft’s first attempt. Rainbow Six: Siege could be called a veteran among live service games, but it is a paid game, not free-to-play. The French company’s previous successes have been very different in terms of free-to-play success. Among free-to-play titles, Brawlhalla is perhaps the most successful, although Ubisoft’s longest-running F2P title is the PC-only MMO sandbox Growtopia. Battle Core Arena, released last summer, Rocksmith+, Roller Champions, Trackmania, and Rabbids Coding are also in the free-to-play lineup on Ubisoft’s website. If these games are doing amazingly well for Ubisoft, the company is keeping pretty quiet about them.

Hyper Scape is another free-to-play game that, like XDefiant, didn’t last long, and Ubisoft made a pretty big mistake. So it is hard to imagine that after Hyper Scape and XDefiant, Scout will not suffer the same fate. Especially since battle royale is not exactly an exciting genre these days. Fortnite, Call of Duty: Warzone, and PUBG are holding their own, and they’re not going away. So will there be any interest for another one of these games?

This is all unofficial, of course, but it’s hard to be more serious about Scout’s chances.
