Battlefield: The Return of the Destructible Environment? [VIDEO]

The new Battlefield may not have a name yet, but Electronic Arts has revealed more of what we can expect in the next installment of the franchise.

The latest update from Battlefield Labs on the next Battlefield episode focuses on destructibility and also shows off some gameplay from the still unfinished build. It looks like the old-fashioned destruction (seen in Battlefield 3 and 4 over a decade ago) will return in the next installment, which is something Electronic Arts is very focused on.

Hence the creation of the Battlefield Team. It involves several studios (DICE, Criterion, Ripple Effect, EA Motive). The developers first talked about their philosophy of destructibility, explaining that environments are physically degraded by damage, and buildings act as garbage. The outer walls are destroyed first, followed by the “core”.

“Our goals for destructibility are to add depth to the game by allowing you to reshape the environment and use your surroundings to your tactical advantage. We’re designing destruction around an easily identifiable visual and audio language that helps you understand what can be destroyed, altered, or transformed through gameplay. We want to make destruction an integral part of your Battlefield experience to create an intuitive, fun, and rewarding environment where you feel empowered to shape the world around you. New mechanics will allow you to create more destruction-related opportunities during gameplay, as well as influence your surroundings through the use of different weapons or vehicle types. For example, debris from destruction now stays on the battlefield, allowing you to create and use new opportunities for cover and protection,” the developers said.

Destructibility is also being fine-tuned based on feedback from players participating in the Battlefield Labs testing program. You can still apply to join the program. The new Battlefield is expected to be released later this year for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series and PC.
