An interesting rumor has surfaced about the future of Samus Aran… it looks like Nintendo is getting serious about the Metroid franchise!
It’s understandable, since Metroid will be 30 years old next year, and yes, it was released in 1986. A lot has happened to our heroine since then (she’s gone into the third dimension, for example, but we’ve also recently seen her in a 2D game in Metroid Dread), but the new fourth installment of Metroid Prime, which started out on the Nintendo GameCube, was announced by the big N in 2017 and has since undergone a reboot and a change of developer, is still to come.
A Spanish leaker, Nash Weedle, wrote on his website that he believes Metroid Prime 5 is in development alongside Metroid Prime 4: Beyond. He says that this episode will be released in 2027 for the Nintendo Switch 2. If this is true, then the Japanese company could leave the Nintendo Switch behind in terms of first-party development, and the Metroid Prime franchise could have two major games in a year and a half to two years.
Of course, this would only be appropriate if Retro Studios and Nintendo are so confident in the success of Metroid Prime 4: Beyond that they know it will sell like hotcakes, so they can build on the results and really trust that MP4:B will be excellent. Nash Weedle pointed to the past, saying that there have been previous examples of two Metroid Prime games in development at the same time.
Metroid Prime 2: Echoes was released for the Nintendo GameCube in November 2004. Metroid Prime 3: Corruption was released on Nintendo Wii in August 2007, and the Wii Remote’s targeting system proved to be a major innovation at the time. A new control scheme was added to the second part at that time, so Metroid Prime 2: Echoes was also playable with the new control scheme.
However, we should add that this is not official at all, just a rumor.
