MOVIE NEWS – Rockstar may have unintentionally handed a golden opportunity to the new action game from GTA 5 mastermind Leslie Benzies – but with that spotlight comes immense pressure and risky expectations.
The hype surrounding the release of Grand Theft Auto 6 has cast a massive shadow over the gaming industry, causing many studios to delay or withhold release dates in fear of going head-to-head with Rockstar’s next juggernaut. But that all changed with the recent announcement that GTA 6 is officially pushed back to May 2026. That delay didn’t just shake the board—it flipped the table, suddenly creating space in the 2025 release calendar for games that would otherwise have been lost in the noise.
One Game Stands to Gain—If It Plays Its Cards Right
In the midst of this disruption, one title in particular stands to benefit—if its developers can seize the moment. The delay of GTA 6 might feel like a generous gift from Rockstar, but it could just as easily become a poisoned chalice. Industry watchers are already focused on MindsEye, the upcoming action-adventure from Leslie Benzies, one of the core figures behind GTA 5. Launching this June, MindsEye could be mistaken for a spiritual successor to GTA at first glance. But that assumption is misleading: this is not a sprawling open-world sandbox. Instead, it’s a more linear, story-driven experience with blockbuster flair.
The team at Build a Rocket Boy has even coined the term “fake open world” to describe it—emphasizing that the game steers the player from mission to mission, offering tightly directed gameplay rather than the freedom fans might expect from something associated with Benzies’ legacy. It’s a guided thrill ride, not a lawless playground.
This Isn’t GTA 6 – And That Needs to Be Made Clear
There’s no denying that having the man behind San Andreas at the helm is a major draw. But that same name recognition brings baggage—expectations that MindsEye simply isn’t built to meet. Many players may walk into this thinking it’s a stopgap until GTA 6 arrives. It’s not. And the developers will need to make that crystal clear before launch day.
“It’s the most ambitious game I’ve ever worked on” – Leslie Benzies said.
MindsEye is just one piece of a much bigger vision. It’s part of a broader initiative that includes Arcadia, a Roblox-style platform for user-generated content, and the ambitious Everywhere, a digital metaverse that will unite all these experiences. As Benzies once described it: “It’s the most ambitious game I’ve ever worked on.” The sheer scope of this project has drawn comparisons to Ready Player One, and not without reason.
A Golden Chance or a Looming Disappointment?
With GTA 6 pushed back, there’s a rare opening in the market for open-world action games in 2025. That vacuum is MindsEye’s shot at stardom—an unexpected chance to grab the spotlight and thrill fans hungry for explosive action and cinematic car chases.
The best part? The wait won’t be long. MindsEye hits PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series on June 10.
