GTA 6 Fans Think Rockstar Is Hiding the Truth About Jason’s Identity

With the release of the second trailer for Grand Theft Auto VI, fans are dissecting every frame, and many believe Rockstar might be misleading players about the main character Jason’s true role in the game.

Predictably, Rockstar’s newest GTA VI trailer has sparked a frenzy of speculation among fans. It’s a familiar scene for anyone who’s followed the Grand Theft Auto series — theories are already flooding social media, with players analyzing every second of the footage to unearth clues about the game’s story and timeline. This time, we know the game, featuring Jason and Lucia, is coming to PS5 and Xbox Series on May 26, 2026, and fans have wasted no time crafting elaborate theories that could potentially rewrite what we thought we knew about the protagonists.

Before going further: beware of spoilers. Rockstar has only released two trailers and some limited details about characters and locations. If you prefer to avoid speculation and stick with official information, it’s best to stop reading now.

In just a few days, fans have found supposed connections between Jason and Michael from GTA V, references to Red Dead Redemption 2, and even potential ties to the character Phil Cassidy. Most notably, there’s rising suspicion that Jason might not be exactly who he seems to be — and the evidence is mounting.

Could Jason Be Working With the Cops?

According to Rockstar’s official website, Jason Duval was raised in a world of crime and deception. “After a stint in the military trying to put his troubled adolescence behind him, he ended up in the Keys doing what he does best: working for local drug dealers. Maybe it’s time to try something new.” The site continues: “Meeting Lucia could be the best or worst thing that’s ever happened to him. Jason is clear about how he’d like the story to end, but right now it’s hard to say.”

The game’s narrative sets up a bleak situation: “Jason and Lucia have always known the cards were stacked against them, but when a seemingly easy heist goes wrong, they get caught in a massive criminal conspiracy that spans the state of Leonida and have to rely on each other more than ever to survive.”

Footage from the trailer shows that Jason and Lucia aren’t just dealing with the underworld of Vice City — they’re also in frequent contact with law enforcement. This has led many to suspect that Jason could be a double agent. But not everyone agrees, including a Reddit user named sidewinda98 who presents a very different theory.

Corrupt Cops, Dirty Deals, and a Classic GTA Betrayal

“Here’s my theory: I don’t think Jason is a cop, like many people assume. But I do think he might be working with the trailer captain. Not in the sense of being an informant, but more like helping organize drug raids and criminal ops with police approval, and getting a cut from the loot. I believe the cops in the trailer will turn out to be the real villains — in typical GTA fashion, through a big betrayal.”

According to sidewinda98, this theory is supported by certain dialogues in the trailer — the prison guard’s conversation with Jason, and a scene where a criminal asks him if he’s a federal agent. There’s also an image showing Jason wearing what appears to be the same tactical gear as a cop from the first trailer during a safe house raid. This has led some to believe Jason might be impersonating an officer in that moment, or perhaps he really is one.

Of course, there are alternative explanations. The conversation with the guard might just imply Jason visited Lucia before. The agent question is a cliché in stories involving criminals. And the similar vest could be a coincidence. Yet the Reddit post has garnered over 3,400 upvotes and has sparked major discussion within the community.

Many fans believe that GTA protagonists often end up entangled with corrupt cops — it’s a staple of the series. If that’s the case again, GTA VI could continue that tradition. While all of this remains speculation, it speaks volumes about the hype and mystery surrounding what could become one of the most significant releases in gaming history.
