MOVIE NEWS – “I was really angry,” admitted Robert Pattinson, who just before Twilight turned down two highly acclaimed 2000s films—decisions he later came to deeply regret. He didn’t even show up to the auditions, instead sticking to the projects we all now know him for.
Despite having proven himself a highly versatile actor in numerous films by top-tier directors over the past decade, a significant portion of the audience still sees Robert Pattinson as Edward Cullen, the sparkling vampire from the teen fantasy hit Twilight. While he proudly defends his involvement in the saga and continues to stand by it, there’s no denying that his career might have taken a darker turn had he chosen differently at the time.
Just before his international breakthrough, Pattinson was offered the chance to audition for two major Westerns: one starring Brad Pitt, and another with Daniel Day-Lewis and Paul Dano. The films in question? The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford and There Will Be Blood. The latter hit particularly hard: “I don’t know why I got scared off by those things.”
“I remember reading it and thinking it was the best thing ever. But I just couldn’t bring myself to go through with it. Afterward, I was really angry. I was planning to audition, but then I thought, ‘I can’t.’” he said in an interview with PlayList, quoted by Sensacine. “The other one was The Assassination of Jesse James. I still don’t know why I backed out. I’d never make the same mistake again.”
And indeed, he didn’t. In the years that followed, Pattinson appeared in a number of films set in past eras, such as Water for Elephants, Queen of the Desert, Z: The Lost City, and Waiting for the Barbarians, which allowed him to showcase more dramatic, layered performances.
Although fans are still eager to see him back in the cape as Batman
Today, He’s Among Hollywood’s Most In-Demand Actors
Thanks to films like The Lighthouse, Tenet, and The Batman, Pattinson has successfully shed the lingering Twilight image and established himself as one of the most talented actors in Hollywood. Now, there’s hardly a filmmaker who wouldn’t jump at the chance to cast him. He’ll soon appear in Christopher Nolan’s upcoming epic The Odyssey, and was most recently seen in Mickey 17, the underrated sci-fi film by Bong Joon-ho (Parasite), which is expected to arrive on HBO Max shortly. As for The Batman: Part II? We’re still waiting—its release is currently scheduled for 2027.
The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford, now streaming on Movistar Plus+, is a crime Western portraying the final days of the infamous outlaw and his complicated relationship with Robert Ford. Meanwhile, There Will Be Blood, available on SkyShowtime, follows Daniel Plainview, a ruthless oil prospector at the dawn of the 20th century. It may not be a classic Western, but it certainly borrows from the genre’s DNA.
