“If you think it’s woke, read the damn books.” With Ciri as the lead in The Witcher 4, some fans are up in arms – but Geralt’s voice actor Doug Cockle isn’t holding back. “You can’t have Geralt in every Witcher game.”
The debut trailer for The Witcher 4 has already stirred up fierce debate online. While many fans are thrilled to return to CD Projekt RED’s fantasy world based on the works of Andrzej Sapkowski, some have been less than pleased by the news that Ciri will be the main character, sidelining Geralt. Critics have labeled the game “woke,” and now, Doug Cockle, the longtime voice of Geralt, has stepped in to shut it down.
In a recent Fall Damage video, Cockle reacts to fan posts, including those calling The Witcher 4 “woke” during the trailer reveal at The Game Awards. His reaction? Clear and unapologetic: “She’s a cool character from The Witcher, and they’re going to focus on that character.”
“I think it’s amazing. You can’t have Geralt for every Witcher game ad nauseam for all eternity,” he continues. Cockle adds that “we’ve seen the end of Geralt’s journey” and it’s time for someone new. “I celebrate Ciri. I celebrate her being the protagonist. So all of you who think she’s woke… [fart sound]. If you read the books, then you’ll understand why CD Projekt decided to go this route.”
Ciri Signals a Bold New Direction for the Witcher Series
There’s more to Ciri than what players saw in The Witcher 3. “There’s a whole rich world of things to explore with Ciri that they didn’t do in The Witcher 3 because the story was about Geralt,” Cockle explains. “But she suggests it. If you think she’s woke, read the damn books – first, because they’re good. Second, because you won’t think she’s so woke anymore.”
CD Projekt RED is fully aware that not everyone is happy with the shift in focus, but they believe in Ciri’s potential. Still, they know their biggest challenge will be “convincing players that Ciri is as important as, or more important than, Geralt.”
