Former Navy SEAL Critiques ‘John Wick: Chapter 4’ Action Scenes, Challenges Baba Yaga’s Tactics

MOVIE NEWS – Across four films, a prequel series (The Continental), and the upcoming spin-off Ballerina, Chad Stahelski and Keanu Reeves have crafted one of modern cinema’s most acclaimed action franchises. Stahelski’s background in stunt coordination and Reeves’ rigorous training have led many to praise the series’ hand-to-hand combat realism. However, former Navy SEAL DJ Shipley offers a contrasting perspective on the close-quarters battles in John Wick: Chapter 4.

In a recent interview with Insider, Shipley evaluated action scenes from popular films and series for their authenticity. He was particularly critical of the Tokyo hotel shootout in John Wick: Chapter 4:

“Charging into the center of a room with 12 adversaries is a tactical misstep. Upon entry, one should move along the longest wall, keeping it to one shoulder at all times.”

Shipley also questioned Reeves’ signature tactical reloads, which have gained popularity among sport shooters:

“While tactical reloads are feasible, his method—stabbing an opponent, flicking out the mag, reloading, all while a 220-pound ninja stands behind him—isn’t realistic.”

More John Wick Films on the Horizon

Despite the seemingly conclusive ending of 2023’s John Wick: Chapter 4, Keanu Reeves isn’t done with the character. In addition to appearing in the spin-off Ballerina (set to release on June 6, 2025), Reeves and Stahelski are developing a fifth John Wick film. Details remain scarce, but one fan theory suggests Wick might battle his way out of the underworld—a scenario that’s unlikely to materialize.
