This ‘Harry Potter’ Fan Theory Claims One of the Most Beloved Characters Was Evil the Whole Time

MOVIE NEWS – If there’s a fantasy book series and movie franchise that will never cease to bring joy, it’s undoubtedly Harry Potter. The eight films offered fans endless opportunities to uncover hidden secrets and mysterious Easter eggs. However, one particular fan theory is deeply unsettling: it suggests that one of Harry Potter’s most beloved characters was evil all along, and even the thought of it is more heartbreaking than the deaths of Hedwig and Dobby combined.

Rubeus Hagrid (Robbie Coltrane) was by Harry’s (and our) side from the very start. Far from a random side character, he was Harry’s first and most trusted ally, rescuing him from the misery of the Dursleys and introducing him to the wonders of Hogwarts and the wizarding world. Their close bond gave Harry a sense of security, but this theory suggests Hagrid’s loyalty was just a cover for a much darker secret.

Hagrid as Voldemort’s Ally

Hagrid’s close relationship with Harry and his early role as confidant put him in the perfect position to hide his true allegiance. Acting as Harry’s guide and protector gave him every opportunity to disguise a potential connection to Voldemort. If this had been Rowling’s intention, it would make for a shocking twist in the upcoming HBO reboot, given how warm and supportive Hagrid always appeared – the perfect setup for a jaw-dropping betrayal.

Adding to this theory is Hagrid’s surprisingly advanced magical abilities despite being expelled in his third year. Accused of releasing Aragog, the giant spider from the Chamber of Secrets, Hagrid was blamed for the deaths of students – though it was later revealed that Voldemort had actually unleashed the deadly basilisk. After his expulsion, Hagrid’s wand was broken and he was forbidden to use magic, yet he still managed to do it – remember when he gave Dudley a pig’s tail? This suggests a hidden talent and hints at Voldemort’s preference for powerful allies who could operate in plain sight – just like Hagrid might have done.

Hagrid’s Hidden Side

Hagrid’s magical abilities are difficult to explain, and even more puzzling is why he kept them hidden. He was never seen as a threat by anyone – the gentle giant was more lovable than intimidating. But maybe that was part of his disguise to get closer to the Chosen One.

When Harry was just a child, Hagrid’s loyalty and harmless demeanor won his trust – and he did it so well that Rowling could have turned him into a traitor later on, though she never did. Even so, Dumbledore trusted Hagrid with a mission that seemed far beyond his abilities: to persuade the giants to join the fight against Voldemort. Considering Hagrid’s knack for spilling secrets and causing more chaos than order, this was a strange choice.

In the end, many giants did side with Voldemort after being swayed by the Death Eaters. Could it be that Hagrid was the one who leaked their location to the Dark Lord? Much like Severus Snape, Hagrid could have become the ultimate traitor. But Rowling never wrote that betrayal – and for that, maybe we can all be grateful. Hagrid remains one of the most beloved characters in Harry Potter’s world, and that’s a comforting thought.
