Although Call of Duty: Black Ops 7 has yet to receive a Switch 2 version, the partnership between Xbox and Nintendo remains intact. Microsoft signed a 10-year deal with Nintendo in 2022 to bring Call of Duty to its consoles, and both companies are still working toward that goal.
At the conclusion of the Xbox Games Showcase 2025, Microsoft had a classic “one more thing” moment. While not everyone expected a new Black Ops 7, one thing became clear: this marks the first time in 20 years that the same studio, Treyarch, has developed two consecutive entries in its sub-series. However, this “historic” milestone was overshadowed by a lingering question: what about the Nintendo Switch 2? Although no official announcement was made, behind-the-scenes efforts are still underway regarding Nintendo’s new console.
The relationship between Call of Duty and Nintendo consoles has historically been minimal. The last handheld entry was Call of Duty: Black Ops: Declassified for PlayStation Vita, but the arrival of Switch 2 was expected to change that. Back in 2022, during Microsoft’s legal battle with the FTC over its acquisition of Activision Blizzard, the company reached a 10-year agreement with Nintendo to bring Call of Duty to its ecosystem.
Xbox and Nintendo remain committed to bringing Call of Duty to Switch 2
While the agreement did not specify a start date, the release of Black Ops 6—the first title developed entirely under Xbox’s ownership—was seen as a stepping stone toward launching the next Call of Duty on Nintendo’s platform, coinciding with the Switch 2’s release year. However, Black Ops 7 made no mention of this plan. Despite this, as reported by Kotaku, Microsoft and Nintendo continue working to adapt Call of Duty for the Japanese company’s new hardware.
While Activision only listed PlayStation and Xbox—both current and previous generations—as launch platforms for Black Ops 7, Microsoft remains committed to ensuring a functional and competitive version of the game on the hybrid console, with an official announcement expected in the near future. If successful, this would mark the first time the franchise has appeared on a Nintendo platform in over a decade.
It’s also worth noting that, while all eyes were on Black Ops 7, it may not be the first Call of Duty title to debut on Switch 2. Although Black Ops 7 has drawn attention due to its futuristic setting and advanced movement mechanics, it remains possible that Warzone or even an exclusive version tailored to the console’s capabilities could arrive first. One thing is certain: bringing Call of Duty to Switch 2 would expand the franchise’s reach to an even broader audience.
